Terminology

Broadband Internet Access - often shortened to just "broadband", is a high data rate connection to the Internet


Browser - a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web (ex: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer)


Dial-up Access - a form of Internet access that uses the facilities of the public switched telephone network to establish a dialed-up connection to an ISP via telephone lines


DSL - a family of technologies that provides digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network


Ethernet cable - provides communication via data packets among computers


Internet Protocol - the primary protocol that establishes the Internet used for relaying information across networks


Internet Service Provider (ISP) - a company that provides access to the Internet over various connection systems

Kilobit - one thousand bits (the basic unit of information in computing and telecommunications)


Modem -  (modulator-demodulator) a device that changes analog signals to digital information, and then decodes the transmitted information


Network Icon - an icon on the computer screen to indicate if an Internet connection is established and working
